How to Protect Your Valuables at Home

To protect your valuables, you need to pay attention to personal security. Limiting and controlling access to your property is always a massive help. But even going old school with a safe can help protect your most treasured possessions. Here are some tips for staying safe at home.

Never Skimp on Security Systems

Security systems are excellent these days, and you don’t need to break the bank to have one installed. Even a Ring system for a few hundred will provide tons more safety and deter almost all burglars. Things like jewelry and tech gadgets are among the most stolen stuff. And the beauty of 2.5 carat diamonds, for example, makes you a target if you have these. Always buy the best security you can afford, including alarms, security cameras, and smartphone apps.

Limit and Control Property Access

A burglar will just give up if you make it hard for them to access your home. Unfortunately, so many people fail to do this and all but welcome them inside. In the US, 30%, or 750,000, burglaries occur because of an unlocked door. This is shocking when it’s as simple as turning a key. If you have a large home, you can use apps to alert you to an unlocked door. And it doesn’t cost too much to install access control systems such as keycards and even biometric systems.

Protect Your Valuables by Staying Private

Have you ever seen those people who flaunt their wealth online? Well, most are probably faking it. But some are not, and by doing this, they make themselves massive targets. Criminals are known to scour social media, looking for marks to see what they have and when they are not home. The Bling Ring used social media to check when Hollywood celebrities were away and target them based on social posts. So stay off social when out and about LA or anywhere else.

Place High-Value Items in a Safe

This might be old school, but a safe is a great way to store away anything you feel is valuable. To some, this is diamonds and cash, and to others, it’s their children’s birth certificates. Whatever it is, a safe can protect what you hold dear. Safes can be freestanding, built into the wall, and even hidden on the floor. And installers can do this in pretty much any room of the home. Modern safes also come with special features such as biometrics and failsafe devices.

Make Your Routine Appear Varied

It isn’t uncommon for criminals to target wealthy marks using social media. This way, they will know where you are at any given time because you either post about it or you are geotagged. Why make it easy? Never use social media in this way. However, some will also watch you just like the movies, so they can establish your routine. This means they can predict when you aren’t home. It helps to at least appear to have a random routine to reduce the chances of prediction.

Buying a cheap security system won’t protect your valuables and puts you at risk. Also, don’t use social media to tell everyone where you are, and try to hide your routine if it’s possible.
